1991: Iron Mining

I am taking a trip around the history of Swedish Iron Ore Mining. The first stamp shows the iron ore mine in Norberg and the following stamp a Walloon forge at Forsmarks Bruk, a 18th Century mining village although pig iron had been produced here since the 16th century.

Top row -Bar iron forging at Svarta and welding at the rolling mill at Smedjebacken part of which I think has been turned into a cultural and industrial heritage centre..

Bottom row - Mine in the old mining town of Dannemora and The Blast Furnace at Pershyttan, a small mining town, this is now a working museum

1974: 25th Anniversary- Founding of PRC

From the blue of Sweden to the red of China and someone who seems to be a happy steel worker.  I hope he is not forgetting

1970: Health and Safety at Work (Design - Beat Mader)

his safety equipment, goggles

hard hat

and perhaps a respirator.  As the stamps say - Work Safely.

Endangered

 The UN has a continuing series of stamps up to the present day of 'Endangered Species'.  Things are not getting better and if fact worse so sadly I don't think they will run out of subjects.

2001: Endangered Species (9th Series)

Here are the Speckled Bear, the Laysan duck from the Hawaiian Islands which has been brought back from near extinction with interventions , the Aardwolf, an insectivorous mammal and the Silver Langur or Silver Leaf Monkey. All the FDC envelopes are the same but whereas the Vienna office always uses a double postmark the New York office does not, I don't know why

1994: Endangered Species (2nd Series)

but this particularly large cancel  probably wouldn't fit on the envelope.  Swinging through the trees are Chimpanzees, perched in its island habitat is the St Lucia Amazon parrot, sliding into the water an American Crocodile and alert at the watering place Addra Gazelles

1995: Endangered Species (3rd Series)

The Giant Armadillo from South America, the American Bald Eagle, Fijian Banded Iguana and of course the Giant Panda recently upgraded from 'endangered' to 'vulnerable'..

2000: Millennium - Life and Earth

The 'Web of Life' stamp featuring Leaf Cutter Ants in London Zoo so no danger of sitting on the ground and discovering from a tickling sensation there is an ants nest nearby and then frantically trying to dust them off.

1961: Insects (Design A Heidrich)

happily Red Wood Ants nest are really big so easily spotted, and fascinating, at a distance.

2020: Brilliant Bugs (Illustrator - Richard Lewingon) 

Here are the all important pollinators busy buzzing, fluttering and hovering around the flowers..

1985: Insects

 

the sound of summer and the Wart-Biter Cricket. The weird name is from the Swedish practice in the 1700s of allowing crickets to bite warts from the skin (it has very strong mouth parts). I'm guessing from these fact that it was a Carl Linnaeus naming (Decticus verrucivorus - verruca meaning wart and vorous -to devour). Oh Carl couldn't you have given it a prettier name.

Out of this World

 

1985: Expo 85 World's Fair Tsukuba, Japan (Design Yury Artsimenev)

For the World Fair in Japan Russia decided to go into space with cosmonauts and

the Molniya 1 (Lighting) communication satellite. ( It is  a mystery to me how I read the Sunday Stamps prompt as a W, I blame my new glasses and worsening eye sight, but at least there is an M on this stamp)

Russia went futurist with 'Energy Sources of the Future' and

a city of the future which doesn't look like anywhere one would like to live without a jet pack. It it is in the shape of a leaf. I wonder what that means? Is it organic?

1992: Expo 92 in Seville

For Expo 92 in Spain the theme was 'The Age of Discovery' which celebrated the 500th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus reaching the Americas from the port of Seville. Here we are setting sail from our blue planet to Mars.  Yay another M.

Diamond shaped stamps seems to have been a trend in 1964 for the Olympics in Tokyo

but not for everyone

The Imagined World

 

One of my favourtie sets this year was the  'Classic Science Fiction'  stamps issued to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the publication of the Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham (a personal favourite) and the 75th Anniversary of the death of HG Wells, who from the 19th Century "saw the coming century clearer than anyone else" in his novels..  Each of the stamps illustrations has been done by a different artist

2003: Philexjeunes Stamp Exhibition - Utility Vehicles (Design Francois Bruere)

A 1932 Renault coach stopped by what looks like a mountain lake and a remarkably clean coal delivery vehicle

1978: Day of the Stamp (Design J Krall)

A rather quaint post-bus of 1913.

 

2020: Mail Ships (Design Andrew Robinson)

Taking to the water here is a three masted steamer, the Ariadne built in 1823. I thought at first the funnel was a lighthouse, then I saw the smoke coming out of it... 

This time I can tell the difference. The 'Antelope' steaming past a  harbour light. This was the first of three ships built for the Great Western Railway when they started the Weymouth-Channel Islands service. Her maiden voyage was on 3rd August 1889
