1981: Europa - Folklore (Design - Fritz Wegner) |
Mummers' plays were performed seasonally usually at Christmas, Easter or Plough Monday and could be described as early pantomime with rhyming couplets. A popular play in England would be George and the Dragon with a twist that George is also eventually killed by a knight called Slasher but George is brought back to life by The Doctor and his magic potion. The plays are stories of birth and re-birth, good over evil enacted by masked or disguised actors. Modern mummers don't often wear elaborate masks. I imagine the mummers glory years were the Middle Ages.

Lovely stamps. Thanks for sharing.
The medieval times had some interesting entertainment. (I rather like the idea of mummers - could be scary and fun). The Swedes have the cutest mailmen?!
A Christmas Carol is a favourite book. I never read it in July, though :)
The Mummers are just wonderful!
Those are amazing stamps! I like the George twist. I have not heard the "Dogs are not only for Christmas," which I take to mean you need to consider they'll be around 15 years. I only know the "Pets aren't Presents." The Fino and Tiny stamp is my favorite, I collect stamps, yes, but have a special collection of dogs ones. That looks like it would be a great postcard! I'm off to search for either, or, both!
Ha! The postcard is an image of the stamp on a postcard! A whole series of postcards of Stubbs' dogs on stamps on postcards in fact.
I love the first stamp about the medieval plays. And the dog stamp too
